This book is an effort to provide an overview of the role of organic synthesis in chemistry, in general and in science. It introduces the major methods of creating carbon-carbon and carbon-nitrogen bonds, along with functional group inter-conversions. Synthetic organic chemistry is an applied science as it borders engineering, the “design, analysis, and/or construction of works for practical purposes”. Organic synthesis of a novel compound is a problem solving task, where a synthesis is designed for a target molecule by selecting optimal reactions from optimal starting materials. Drugs that interfere with bacterial DNA synthesis might target enzymes not found in the animal cell like the bacterial DNA girase (topoisomerase II) that pack and unpack supercoiled bacterial DNA. Some antibiotics also target the bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, and still others interfere with metabolites essential for DNA synthesis and repair. Ved Parkash Patial did B.Sc. from Panjab University Chandigarh and M.Sc. From HP University Shimla with specialization in Organic Chemistry. After qualifying NET-JRF of CSIR, he completed Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from Himachal Pradesh University. He is having teaching experience of more than 20 years in various Undergraduate and Post Graduate colleges of Himachal Pradesh. He has published more than a dozen research papers in various national and international journals. He Guided more than fifteen research scholars for M. Phil. Degree and presently guiding Ph.D. scholars also. He has been selected by UPSC New Delhi as Reader of Chemistry, NDA, Khadakwasla Pune, awarded PDF by UGC New Delhi and had been a member of various Academic and Science Societies. Presently he is working as Associate Professor of Chemistry, Govt. Post Graduate College Dharamshala (H.P.) India.
